S.M.I².L.E. for the Doctor
William Dewey Loudermilk

Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out
It’s still what the future’s about
So what does the caterpillar see when it looks in the sky
does it fear the flight and folly of the butterfly?
Does the caterpillar sing the praises of the tree
as it hungrily chomps away at the leaves?
Caterpillar morals don’t apply to the butterfly
Don’t get stoned to the Earth get higher in the sky
It’s okay to evolve past the terrestrial hive
and claim the DNA birthright of a greater life
It is our destiny to return to outer space
Take a sacrament to free your mind, to break free from the game
Timothy Leary was a genius and a prophet
so turn on, tune in and drop out

The owners of the game called control
were afraid Dr. Leary would free the people
so they set him up time and time again
because he wanted the opportunity to use his own brain
Until finally a kangaroo court
sentenced him to twenty years for two joints
The psych tests he took for prison bore his name
so he got minimum and beat them at the game
Timothy Leary had some time to plan his escape
Hand over foot he crossed a wire out of jail
then the Weathermen Underground furnished a ride
and took him to Detroit from where he’d seek asylum
Timothy Leary was a genius and a prophet
so turn on, tune in and drop out

They shaved him bald for a disguise
He looked so straight no one would think he got high
to test it out they went and saw Woodstock the Movie
a fugitive of the law cried during the Star-Spangled Banner
To Algeria, Dr. Leary flew to seek sanctuary
but this time the prison guards were the Black Panthers
They controlled his life; had him on house arrest
They taxed his friends out of their money and hash
They had to keep him from getting around
because he’d get the support of the Algerians
So the High Priest took off for the Swiss Alps
to be enslaved to a gun-running gangster in exile
Timothy Leary was a genius and a prophet
so turn on, tune in and drop out

So from a third world Black Panther police state
to the luxury of a man running guns for the CIA
his new jail was one of luxury
and he had the time to learn to ski
But facing extradition in a Swiss jail
He’s cornered into signing a contract for bail
and if you read Diary of a Hope Fiend
notice the copyright is not Dr. Leary
Timothy Leary continued to run to Afghanistan
where he was finally kidnapped by the man
then taken to Folsom to a solitary cell
they thought they’d teach him and put him in hell
Timothy Leary was a genius and a prophet
so turn on, tune in and drop out

But they didn’t know that the brain and mind equal two
and they left him alone with the smartest man he knew
He developed his theory that evolution has a plan
Infinite life exploring space is his vision of man
If he knew how it’d go after 1960
i wonder if he’d do it again and take his first trip
the mushrooms in Mexico on summer break from Harvard
took a psychologist and made him a High Priest Shaman
A scientific atheist caught a glimpse of the divine
he found an opening in the eternity of mind
He tickled his mind from deep inside his brain
and realized it was all but a game
Timothy Leary was a genius and a prophet
so turn on, tune in and drop out

Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out
It’s still what the future’s about
Caterpillar morals don’t affect the butterfly
don’t get stoned to the Earth get higher in the sky
It’s okay to evolve beyond the terrestrial hive
and let our DNA claim it’s right to a greater life
Evolve ourselves to really use our brain
and create an entirely new game
Do the morals used before the cocoon apply to the butterfly?
It is the nature of man to want to get high!
Like Socrates he was imprisoned for speaking the truth
Like Socrates he tried to turn on the wisdom of youth
Timothy Leary was a genius and a prophet
so turn on, tune in and drop out
