Lucke Summer Daze
William Dewey Loudermilk

I’m not too fond of winter, because it gets too cold
Springtime makes me feel young at heart, but by fall I’ve gotten too bold
But by my friend Jon’s calendar, summer can last four hundred days
His last name is Lucke, he’s a fungi, and I love those Lucke Summer Daze
Absurd this story may appear, but I swear it is no lie
I know the witnesses personally, or I saw it with my own eyes
Aurauric was our meeting, like rats who’ve escaped their maze
and we both know when life beats you down, that’s when you really need to play

And if you go in with an open mind, you might find yourself amazed
with stories that defy description, of those Lucke Summer Daze
oh, those Lucke Summer Daze when my soul needs to play
I love those Lucke Summer Daze, when my soul needs to play

I’ll start with what I didn’t see, but only with what I’ve heard
like camping Easter weekend with Joe, Sunday they thought they were alone in the woods
but then a lone man arrives, and takes a neighboring site
he then proceeds to impose himself on their night
now Joe is ‘shroomin’ too hard to speak, but not Jon Lucke
He talks for hours and shares his ‘shrooms and weed
but when the topic turned to work that left Jon dismayed
he learned he initiated a preacher into those Lucke Summer Daze

Cause if you go in with an open mind, you might find yourself amazed
with stories that you can’t describe from those Lucke Summer Daze
Oh, those Lucke Summer Daze, when my soul needs to play
I love those Lucke Summer Days, when my soul needs to play

Now it bummed me out to miss that one, and here’s another where I couldn’t be there
Camping again this time with Stephanie, at a Renaissance fair
Now that preacher drank his shrooms from a bottle of vodka that was meant for me
But I never even got one shot or dose thanks to my friend Jon Lucke
Back to the story of the Renaissance fair and what our hero did there
the preacher must have blessed what some devil soon would curse
because up walks some satan dressed fool to the drum circle
Lucke laughs and tweaks the devils horns and he says that he’s not afraid

Cause with a last name like Lucke he can never lose the faith
that things will work out if you play nice, so he always plays nice
“If you play nice, you’ll always win” Lucke always says
and I believe him with what I’ve seen of those Lucke Summer Daze

Now if you don’t believe that Lucke exists, there is little else I can do
but maybe a little Lucke exists deep inside of you
Lucke exists and I swear it’s true, because I’m the sanest guy he knew
that’s enough to leave me amazed with all our Lucke Summer Daze
It all started thanks to Terrell and Paul who recognized friends who needed to meet
When I walked in I saw familiar faces, and was introduced to Jon Lucke
I never guessed that aurauric night we’d have so many plights
so many adventures lost in a haze of all those Lucke Summer Daze

Cause I will rush in with an open mind and I’ll never be afraid
like Lucke charging downhill going where he shouldn’t go
throwing caution to the wind his first time on a snowboard
Double concussed with a smile on his face lost in a Lucke Sumer Daze

One Sunday he dropped me off, with all the gear at six mile
I inflated the raft and began my wait, with a beer and a smile
the water was too high for Blues to run a bus, so by the time Lucke showed up
I was happily drunk and ate the shrooms to sober up
we plunged in to race downstream when the water was so fast
what usually took six hours only took three, just Lucke and me
Hauling out to skip stones, forgetting to get high
that we saved to sit on a car, stuck in the river side
Cause if you go in with an open mind, you might find yourself amazed
with stories that you can’t describe from those Lucke Summer Daze
Oh, those Lucke Summer Daze, when my soul needs to play
I love those Lucke Summer Days, when my soul needs to play

Then there were all of our bus trips, eating the shrooms when we got on
my bike would ride on the front of the bus and Lucke carried the Sector 9
Then I’d tie a rope to my seat and toe Lucke all over town
Not a cop in the city would care what we were doing there
But we were shroomin hard in IMAX 3-D followed by chasing a deer
back to Animal Control in downtown Indy, but Animal Control disappeared
then I’d toe him to Pott’s porch, well over five miles
but it was worth it every time to see Lucke’s truest smile

Cause with a last name like Lucke he can never lose the faith
that things will work out if you play nice, so he always plays nice
“If you play nice, you’ll always win” Lucke always says
and I believe him with what I’ve seen of those Lucke Summer Daze

I love those Lucke Summer Daze when my soul needs to play
I love those Lucke Summer Daze, when my soul needs to play
